All I'm doing is putting Brancusi's Endless column on the ground. Carl André, 2018

Installation, exposition"Fragile keep dry", SEA Art, Port-Médoc, France

Ice is a time based material and brings to mind feelings of loss and decay as it erodes, so ice blocks, as a fragment or damaged unity, fragile, are inextricably bound up with the relentless advance of time. They are taking on random forms, "a free fall of the material into formlessness". (Rosalind Krauss) All sculpture has some relationship to the ground, of course, whether it shoots up, extends over or sits perched on a pedestal, but art that lies down is intentionally antimonumental, opposed to the basic logic of standing upright.
